Adani regional roadshows draw keen interest

The Carmichael coal project is a litmus test of Australia's ability to take advantage of opportunities stemming from steady growth in India, according to Adani Australia projects director Peter Thomas. He was commenting as the Adani Supplier Roadshow kicked off in Rockhampton this morning, with 250 people packed into the Rockhampton Leagues Club (pictured above), followed by session in Emerald this afternoon. Roadshow places filled up quickly in Rockhampton, Emerald, Clermont, Mackay and Townsville - with more than 1200 registrations across the locations, according to event organisers at Bowen Basin Mining Club. No further places are available. Mr Thomas said the aim of the roadshow was to maximise business engagement with regional Queensland, particularly in the Rockhampton, Townsville, Mackay-Bowen and Clermont-Central Queensland project regions. “While the initial project opportunities are in construction, the bulk of the ongoing opportunities for regional businesses will be in long-term project supply,” Mr Thomas said. GEA chief executive officer Carli Homann. Gladstone Engineering Alliance (GEA) chief executive officer Carli Homann - who attended the briefing - said the group was pleased to hear that Adani remained strongly committed to engaging regional suppliers for the project. They were implementing tools to engage with regional suppliers over the coming months, she said. How to prepare for supply opportunities Mrs Homann said there were several things local suppliers could do to prepare their businesses for these upcoming opportunities. “Indigenous engagement is going to be a key focus for Adani’s procurement team, so I would encourage suppliers to meet with local Indigenous groups to determine how they can work together and identify opportunities,” Mrs Homann said. “Adani also indicated that they want to begin the dialogue with potential suppliers now. They have created dedicated email addresses for use by Queensland regional contractors and suppliers only (supply.mine@adani.in for the mine project and supply.rail@adani.in for the rail project).” “Adani encouraged suppliers to email them and tell them their story. They want to know what regional towns suppliers are operating in, what their community involvement is, how many employees they have and what their capacity and capabilities are. They also advised that from April this year they are planning to launch a Regional Supplier Portal to assist their engagement with regional suppliers,” Mrs Homann said. The Rockhampton and Emerald sessions were attended by representatives of the Wangan and Jagalingou people, traditional owners of the land on which the Carmichael project is proposed. Further sessions are scheduled in Clermont and Mackay on January 24, and in Townsville on January 25.
