Council signs off on raft of works for Cairns area

Cairns Regional Council has given the green light for the $10.5 million Stage 2 development of the Shields Street Heart project in the city’s CBD.

Part of the City Centre Alive revitalisation program, Stage 2 will revive the section of Shields St between Lake St and Abbott St.

Early works started this month and the project is due for completion at the end of June 2017.

Meanwhile, Stage 2 works at the Walker Road Sporting Precinct at Edmonton are due to start next month.

Cairns Regional Council today endorsed the next phase, which includes construction of two rectangular fields, a full-sized cricket oval with turf wicket and a junior cricket oval.

A further 177 permanent and 45 temporary car parking spaces will be added, along with a new access road, lighting, landscaping, fencing and utilities.

Stage 1 of the precinct was recently completed and included four baseball and softball diamonds which have hosted junior games since April.

Stage 2 is expected to cost $5.65 million and is due for completion in July 2017.

The council also today formally approved construction of a new road to link Redlynch Connection Rd with St Andrew’s College at a cost of $2.6 million.

The road, to be named Portelli Rd after a prominent local family, will service a future sporting precinct opposite the shopping centre, as well as St Andrew’s College, the childcare and community kindergarten and the existing Redlynch Community Sports Complex.

The two-lane road will be accompanied by a 3m-wide footpath on the sports complex side of the road to provide safe pedestrian access to the school and sports facilities.
