CS Energy rolls out raft of shutdown works

CS Energy is wrapping up a $68 million overhaul of Kogan Creek Power Station near Chinchilla and gearing up for a $31 million shutdown at its Callide B plant near Biloela. More than 200,000 hours have been worked on the Kogan Creek overhaul since it began on April 8 this year, with the site workforce of CS Energy employees and contractors peaking at 515 people in early May. The overhaul - a six-day-a-week, 24-7 operation – is expected to finish in the second week of June. Kogan Creek general manager Phil Matha (pictured below) said the overhaul would keep the 750MW power station operating safely, reliably and efficiently into the future. “CS Energy employees, and the major contractors MHPS (Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems), Siemens and Australian Laboratory Services, have put in a massive effort on this overhaul,” Mr Matha said. “I’d also like to acknowledge the local communities of Chinchilla and Dalby for hosting the extra workers in town for the overhaul, including helping us feed, accommodate and transport them to and from site.” In a busy overhaul year for CS Energy, the company now turns its focus to its three remaining shutdown projects for 2016 – two at the coal-fired Callide Power Station and the third at the pumped storage hydroelectric Wivenhoe Power Station near Fernvale. The shutdown work at Callide Power Station Unit B1 is scheduled to run from July 30-September 16 and is expected to involve a contract workforce of 350 in addition to about 205 power station employees. The major contractor for the Callide B overhaul will be MHPS, which has a Gladstone office and has advised CS Energy that about 95 per cent of its workforce for the job will be from Central Queensland. Highpoint Access and Rescue, based in North Rockhampton, will provide industrial rope access for working at heights. BLJ In Situ Solutions will provide mechanical maintenance services, while Cleanaway’s Gladstone operation will provide waste management for the overhaul. The Wivenhoe Power Station Unit W1 major overhaul will run from August 1 to October 24, and a month-long mini overhaul of Callide Power Station Unit C3 is due to start on October 1.
