Engineering excellence on show at Qld awards

A Brisbane flood recovery project to rebuild the city's ferry terminals has won the RW Hawken Overall Project Award at this year's Australian Engineering Excellence Awards Queensland. The Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport and Wellcamp Business Park in Toowoomba, Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal (WICET) Stage 1 at Gladstone and Ergon Energy's Grid Utility Support System (GUSS) also staked a claim in the winners' ranks. Following the 2011 Brisbane floods, the Queensland Government ran a global competition resulting in Aurecon and Cox Rayner Architects being appointed to deliver new, flood-resilient ferry terminals. Engineers Australia Queensland general manager Ian McEwan was impressed by the project’s synthesis of elements never previously considered for ferry terminals, creating a new standard in intelligent terminal design. Engineers Australia Queensland general manager Ian McEwan. “Importantly, the project’s innovative design features usher in resilience and longevity, even in the face of natural disasters, allowing the terminals to be returned to operation shortly after significant flood events,” Mr McEwan said. “Engineers Australia congratulates Aurecon and Cox Rayner Architects for the ingenuity and innovation of their design, which is a reflection of a uniquely strong collaboration between maritime and mechanical engineers and the architectural discipline.” Public Works and Housing Minister Michael de Brenni said that the Australian Engineering Excellence Awards Queensland were important for the state because they publicly acknowledged the critical contribution that engineers made to the viability of our communities. “All of the nominees and winners of tonight’s awards are unsung heroes of the Queensland economy and the Palaszczuk government is pleased to take every opportunity to recognise the engineering profession’s contribution,” Mr de Brenni said. “The Queensland government is committed to delivering a pipeline of infrastructure work throughout the state and we are confident that Engineers Australia Queensland members will play an integral role in the delivery of these projects.” All Queensland Excellence Award winners are eligible to enter the national Australian Engineering Excellence Awards on 23 November 2016 in Brisbane during the Australian Engineering Conference.
