Fire cuts production at Cannington

South32 has revised its production guidance at Cannington mine in north-west Queensland for this financial year following an underground fire this month.

In its quarterly report to the market this week the company said remediation work to repair load-out and shaft haulage infrastructure damaged by the fire was continuing.

Production guidance for the year has been revised to 16.5 million oz of silver, 135,000 tonnes of lead and 70,000 tonnes of zinc as mill throughput will remain constrained while this work is undertaken and the extraction of the higher grade (silver/lead) 60L stope is delayed.

The company said Cannington silver, lead and zinc saleable production had decreased by 25 per cent, 22 per cent and 5 per cent respectively in the nine months ended March 2017 due to lower feed grades, consistent with the mine plan.
