Forum to help Gladstone firms snag council work

Designers, contractors and suppliers interested in securing Gladstone Regional Council capital projects contracts are urged to join an information session tomorrow (July 27). The council said the session sprang from its preference for appointing local contractors whenever possible. "Those attending the session will learn what water, sewerage, roads, waste and parks capital projects are to be delivered by council in the 2016-17 financial year," Mayor Matt Burnett said. "The session will also cover how to apply for council tenders, how tenders are evaluated and provide information about council's local procurement plan." Gladstone Regional Council adopted its Local Preference Policy on June 21, 2016, in order to establish a standard process by which local businesses could tender or quote for council contracts in competition with their counterparts from outside the region. The policy also encourages the development of competitive local suppliers via various measures adopted by council including the placement of orders where the local supplier is competitive with tenders or quotes from outside the region, and actively seeking local suppliers considered capable of meeting contractual requirements. The council said the new policy was having an immediate effect, with more than $1 million worth of contracts awarded to local businesses last week. They included; Supply and delivery of bagged concrete - Bororen Produce Plumbing fittings and fixtures (brassware, copper fittings, miscellaneous products) - Reece Australia Plumbing fittings and fixtures (poly fittings, PVC products) - Total Eden Supply and delivery of hardware - Minemech Services Spill kits - CQ Retail Partnership Supply and delivery of cationic emulsion - Downer EDI Works Fire fighting system - Xport Plumbing Training and Driver Education Centre (CQ Benaraby Motorsportz) - Tony Noy Builder Council Finance and Corporate Governance chair Cr Rick Hansen said the Local Preference Policy would benefit the local economy in two major ways. "Firstly, the policy provides discounts on tender prices for local businesses, making them more competitive and, secondly, ensuring any businesses from outside the region which are awarded a contract employ local suppliers and workers," Cr Hansen said. "By adopting the Local Preference Policy, council is encouraging local businesses to compete for its contracts and it would be great to see a healthy number of businesses represented at the information session." The information session will be held from 10am to noon at the Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre tomorrow.
