Western Downs Regional Council has approved one of the largest solar projects in Australia, expected to involve an investment of up to $1.5 billion.
Equis Energy’s 1000MW Wandoan South Solar Project is expected to generate up to 600 jobs across the three stages of development.
Western Downs Mayor Paul McVeigh said the project was further evidence of the council’s commitment to renewable energy in the region.
“We are serious about cementing the Western Downs as the Energy Capital of Australia and securing the enormous economic and community benefits that will bring to our region,” he said.
The project, 21km south-west of the Wandoan township, will cover 1424ha chosen for its suitability and proximity to existing energy infrastructure.
Based in Singapore, Equis Energy describes itself as Asia’s largest independent renewable energy developer and investor.
In February, it announced it was investing $400 million in two solar projects in South Australia and Collinsville,Queensland.
Development approval has been received from the Whitsunday Regional Council for the Collinsville North Solar Project, to be
constructed on land close to the Collinsville North substation in 2017.
