Mackay water business transformation a real winner

Mackay Regional Council’s innovative use of technology to reduce water use and costs has been recognised on the national stage.

The council won the 2016 National Award for Excellence in Local Government for transforming its water business through the installation of automated meter infrastructure (AMI) and the development of MiWater software, including the myh2o website.

Automatic meter reading technology and the myh2o website identify and inform council and residents of water leaks and high consumption faster, saving time, money and water.

The council said about 12 per cent of residential properties were successfully informed of water leaks last year, significantly reducing water loss and the associated costs.

The project had already won the Digital Innovation in Local Government category at the national level before being announced as the major overall winner at the awards dinner  during the National General Assembly of Local Government in Canberra last week.

Mackay Regional Council also took out the ‘Innovation to Create More Liveable Australian Cities’ category of the awards for its city centre revitalisation work.

Mayor Greg Williamson said the national awards success was tremendous recognition for council.

“To take out two categories at the national awards was a fantastic achievement in itself,’’ Cr Williamson said.

“We were the only multiple category winner at the awards. But to then win the major award is a huge result and testimony to the innovation of this council and its staff.”

Other Queensland councils named among the category winners or as highly commended in the 2016 National Awards for Local Government included Cairns Regional Council and Southern Downs Regional Council.

Cairns was highly commended in the Contributing to Regional Growth category for its Cairns Water Security Strategy, while Southern Downs Regional Council won the Excellence in Road Safety award for its Backpackers & Seasonal Workers Road Safety Campaign.
