Queensland tops skills comp

Queensland apprentices have taken out the two top places in the 2016 WorldSkills Australia National Refrigeration Competition.

The competition was held from Tuesday to Thursday this week at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre in conjunction with the Air Conditioning Refrigeration and Building Services (ARBS) Exhibition.

The nation’s top 10 refrigeration apprentices had 18 hours to demonstrate their skills and knowledge by completing four tasks: installing a refrigeration system, commissioning an airconditioning system, refrigeration fault finding and electrical fault finding.

Gold medallist was Nathan McHugh and the silver medallist was Hayden McColl – both from TAFE Queensland SkillsTech – followed by Matthew Cleave, from the Sydney west region.

Supported by the Australian Government and Heatcraft Australia, the National Refrigeration Competition is the culmination of close to a year of preparation for the 10 participating apprentices -who each progressed from winning WorldSkills Australia Regional Competitions across the country.
