Road trip with a difference

Linfox road trains operate 24/7 hauling metal concentrate along the 180km route from Cannington mine to the Yurbi rail loading facility, 15km east of Cloncurry.

Each of the five-strong fleet of quad road trains is 53.5m long and has 86 tyres.

All up they travel 1.666 million km annually on this route, transporting more than 500,000 tonnes of concentrate to the rail facility – bound for Port of Townsville.

Driver Mike Bird (pictured) is among 32 Linfox employees working on the South32 Cannington contract and featured in a recent YouTube film on the ‘iconic route’.

He describes the natural beauty of the area as ‘absolutely mindboggling’ at times.

“I started off in the workshop in 1983 and moved down here two years ago – I love it,” he said.

The Cannington site is celebrating 20 years of operation in north-west Queensland this month.
