Safety conference organisers seeking submissions

The call is out for papers for the annual Queensland Mining Industry Health and Safety Conference, to be held at Jupiters Gold Coast in 2017 after a successful shift to the venue last year from Townsville. Staged from August 6 to 8, the event – one of the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere - will showcase the latest advances in health and safety practices available to the Queensland mining industry. Up to 650 delegates from throughout Queensland and across Australia are expected to attend the three-day conference themed ‘Sharing My Story – Understanding and Leading in Times of Adversity’. Conference chair Shane Apps encouraged members of the resources and related industries to submit a paper abstract to be considered for presentation in one of the concurrent sessions. “These presentations are an important part of the conference program and should reflect any advances or solutions to existing occupational health and safety problems with the Queensland resources industry,” Mr Apps said. “We encourage those in the industry to seriously consider sharing their knowledge and expertise with their colleagues at the conference. “There are also no boundaries to where good ideas can come from and its through shared experience and insight that we evolve best practice.” Mr Apps, Peabody Energy health, safety and training manager – operations, said submissions were open to everyone associated with the industry including companies, sites, operators, consultants, lawyers, suppliers and regulators. Paper abstracts must be received by Friday, March 31 and suggested topics include: Implementing the Hierarchy of Controls; Vehicle Interactions; Physical and Psychological Well-Being; Occupational Hygiene; and HPI and Accidents Share, among others. Entrants are also sought for recognition in the conference’s two awards programs. The Innovation Awards reward ingenuity and advances in systems technology and processes while the Health Program Award salutes creative and practical solutions to personal and occupational health problems. All award submissions must be received by Friday, May 19. Mr Apps said organisers had decided to keep the conference at Jupiters Gold Coast after the success of last year’s event, which attracted more than 600 delegates. “The conference proved to be a great success on many levels, however one of the main advantages was the ability to stage all of the conference activities in one location, which maximised the opportunity for delegates to interact,” he said.
