School build launches $60m project blitz

Site works are due to start as soon as this week for the new Cairns Special School as a $60 million accelerated works program kicks off in Far North Queensland.

Treasurer and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt said Hutchinson Builders signed off on the school contract last week, with construction to be completed this year.

He said the State Government’s accelerated $60 million pipeline of works would support more than 150 full-time equivalent local jobs across the Far North.

“This is about fast-tracking jobs and economic activity by getting projects like the $25 million Cairns Special School under way as soon as possible,” he said.

Other projects being fast-tracked in the Cairns region include:

  • $13 million to repair and replace parts of the Cairns Convention Centre roof
  • $12 million upgrades of Ergon depot at McLeod St and Lake St offices;
  • $4.5 million for a replacement police station at Gordonvale;
  • $3.5 million for the Gordonvale fire station;
  • $2.5 million for Bruce Highway works between Innisfail and Cairns;
  • $450,000 for Woree State High School security fence upgrade; and
  • $200,000 to refurbish Block X and Y at Innisfail State College.
